An open-world action RPG set in the pawsome world of Felingard. Explore dungeons, fight dragons, and save catkind.

Our Take

The Gentlebros, a three-person studio out of Singapore, could not find investors for Cat Quest. Nobody wanted to fund an action RPG about cats. So they won a government grant, built it anyway, and quietly created one of the most accessible RPGs ever made.

The setup: your sister is kidnapped by the villain Drakoth. You are a cat with a sword. The kingdom of Felingard needs saving. Go.

Minute to minute, you run across a tapestry-style overworld, pick up quests from bulletin boards in towns, enter dungeons that load instantly with zero transition screens, and fight enemies in real-time combat. Slash with your weapon, dodge-roll out of danger, cast spells. Equipment determines your playstyle since there are no locked classes. Wearing knight gear gives you armor regeneration. Wearing mage gear boosts your mana. Swap whenever you want.

Everything in this game is a cat pun. The spells are Flamepurr, Lightnyan, and Healpaw. There is a town called Catpital City. The dragons are literally called Dragonblood cats. If cat puns make you groan, this game will destroy you. If cat puns make you smile, this game was made specifically for your brain.

The honest critique: the combat gets repetitive. After the first hour you have fought most of the enemy types the game has to offer. Dungeons follow a pattern that does not evolve much. Your numbers go up but the core loop stays the same. If you are coming from deeper RPGs looking for complexity, you will run out of things to discover faster than you expect.

But Cat Quest is not trying to be Elden Ring. It is trying to be the RPG you hand to someone who has never played an RPG before, or the RPG you play on a Tuesday night when your brain is tired and you just want to hit things and feel good about it. On those terms, it delivers completely.

The sequel, Cat Quest II (2019), adds co-op with a dog companion and roughly doubles the content. Cat Quest III (2024) goes full pirate theme with ship sailing. The Gentlebros have a nine-game plan for the series because, as they put it, cats have nine lives.

the cozy factor

Why It's Cozy

The dungeons are bite-sized, most clearable in under two minutes. The overworld map looks like a painted storybook. There is no permadeath, no inventory management stress, and no complex skill trees. You walk into a dungeon, hit things with a sword, walk out with better equipment. The entire game runs on the principle that RPGs should be fun, not homework.

for the cat lovers

Why Cat Lovers Love It

Every single thing in this game is a cat pun. The kingdom is Felingard. Your spells are Flamepurr, Lightnyan, and Healpaw. The villain is Drakoth. The world map is covered in cat-shaped landmarks. The Gentlebros clearly asked themselves how many cat puns they could fit in a game and the answer was all of them.
