Our Take
Spiritfarer describes itself as “a cozy management game about dying.” That sounds like a contradiction. It is not.
You play as Stella, a young woman who takes over the role of ferrymaster for the dead from Charon himself. Your job: build a boat, take on spirit passengers, care for them, learn their stories, and eventually bring them to the Everdoor when they are ready to move on.
The daily routine is genuinely cozy. Wake up, cook breakfast for your passengers (each one has food preferences and moods you need to track), tend your garden, run the sawmill, smelt ore at the foundry, weave thread at the loom. Every crafting station has its own active minigame rather than a passive timer. You physically run the saw back and forth. You pump the bellows. Better timing and rhythm give you better yields. It makes busywork feel tactile in a way most management games never achieve.
The boat itself grows as you play. You add rooms, kitchens, gardens, guest houses. You sail between islands to gather resources and explore platforming sequences. The movement feels surprisingly good for a management game. Stella can jump, glide, zipline, and bounce between trampolines on her ever-expanding vessel.
Story and character details (spoilers)
The spirits are the heart of the game. Each one represents someone from Stella’s life, and their stories explore different facets of loss and letting go.
Gwen, your first passenger and mentor figure, teaches you the basics. Losing her sets the emotional tone for everything that follows. Atul, the cheerful uncle figure, disappears one night without warning. No farewell scene. No trip to the Everdoor. He is simply gone when you wake up. Players consistently describe this as the most devastating moment in the game because it mirrors how real loss sometimes happens with no closure.
The ending reveals that Stella herself has been dying the entire time. Her final journey to the Everdoor, alone, is one of the most quietly devastating sequences in modern gaming.
The honest criticism: the late game gets tedious. There is no automation for any of your crafting stations, and as you take on more passengers with more complex needs, the busywork escalates. Tracking who is hungry, who is sad, and where they wandered off to on your increasingly sprawling boat can feel more like an obligation than a joy. Some players found the errand-running eventually overshadowed the character moments that make the game special.
The Farewell Edition (now the standard version on all platforms) added three free content updates with new spirit characters. A second player can control Daffodil, Stella’s cat, in local co-op, which makes the resource gathering more manageable and more fun.
If you have the patience for the mid-game busywork, the emotional payoff is extraordinary. Few games attempt what Spiritfarer attempts, and fewer still pull it off this well. Keep tissues nearby for the last hour.

Between errands you cook meals for your passengers, each with their own preferences. You can hug every spirit on your boat with a dedicated button. The hand-drawn animation is some of the most beautiful in any game this decade.

Your co-op companion is Daffodil, Stella's cat. A second player can control Daffodil to help gather resources and operate stations. The cat is mostly there for emotional support and practical help, which, honestly, is what cats are for.
