Build the farm of your dreams in this beloved farming sim. Grow crops, raise animals, make friends, and explore caves.

Our Take

One guy made this. Eric Barone, working alone in his apartment, averaging ten hours a day, seven days a week, for over four years. He did the programming, the art, the music, the writing, and the design. That is not a marketing story. That is what actually happened. And the result is the most beloved farming game ever made.

You inherit a farm from your grandfather. You quit your soul-crushing Joja Corporation desk job. You move to the country. That setup takes about ninety seconds, and then the game just lets you go. Here is some land. Here are some seeds. Figure it out.

The first spring is overwhelming in the best way. Too many crops to plant, too many people to meet, a mine to explore, fish to catch, forageables scattered across every screen. You will go to bed at 1:50am in-game time more nights than you will admit. By fall, you have a rhythm. By winter, you realize you have sunk sixty hours into the game and have strong opinions about which villager deserves your affection.

The villagers are what separate Stardew from every farming game that came before it.

Character stories (minor spoilers)

Shane is struggling with depression and alcohol dependency. His heart events take you from sharing beers on a dock to finding him passed out on the floor to a genuinely heavy cliff scene. The game does not shy away from this, and the resolution feels earned rather than tidy. Penny is quietly trying to build a life outside her mother’s trailer. Linus lives in a tent by choice and the town treats him poorly for it. These are not just gift-receiving machines. They have arcs that unfold slowly over in-game years.

The gameplay loop is simple and endlessly satisfying. Wake up, water crops, check on animals, forage, fish, mine, cook, gift, decorate. Every season brings new crops, festivals, and reasons to stay up past midnight. There is combat in the mines. It is fine. There is fishing, which will make you swear at your screen exactly twice before it clicks and becomes your favorite activity.

The 1.6 update, released in March 2024, added new crops (broccoli, carrots, powdermelon), eight-player multiplayer on PC, the option to have multiple pets including turtles, a new Meadowlands farm type, 280 furniture items, new festivals, mine layouts, and seasonal NPC outfits. All free. For a game that costs fifteen dollars.

There is nothing else to say. Buy it on whatever platform is closest to your hand right now.

the cozy factor

Why It's Cozy

There is no way to lose. Your crops do not wither if you forget them. You cannot go bankrupt. The entire game runs on the quiet assumption that you will get to everything eventually and that is perfectly fine. Rain days become an excuse to fish or visit the saloon. Winter becomes a season for mining and gift-giving. Every track on the soundtrack belongs on a lo-fi study playlist.

for the cat lovers

Why Cat Lovers Love It

You can adopt a cat on your farm. It will sleep in random spots, block your doorways, lie on the bed so you cannot get in, and park itself directly in your path at the worst possible moment. It does nothing productive. Real cat owners will find this painfully accurate.
